The Easiest Way To Add A File Upload Form To Your WordPress Website
What is the purpose of having a file upload form on a website?
Well, think about the last time you uploaded a file to the internet.
What was it for?
Possibly a job application? Maybe it was a new image for your profile picture?
Having a file upload feature attached to your online forms allows your users to submit files or media easily to a website.
The whole purpose is to help you collect information faster and easier.
Most likely you are already looking for an easy way to add an upload form to your website. It’s probably what brought you here in the first place.
Well, you’re in luck. This article is a step by step guide on the easiest way you can add a file upload form to your WordPress Website.
Install & Activate the WPForms Plugin
To begin, access your WordPress dashboard and navigate to plugins. Search for, install and activate WPForms.
WPForms is a form building plugin specifically for WordPress websites. It is by far the easiest form builder available today. You can create and edit multiple forms which then can be embedded throughout your website.
It is by far the most hassle-free way to add forms on your website.
The WPForms plugin has a File Upload Form template already available for you to use and customize. You can find it within the Additional Templates section when accessing the WPForms dashboard.
Additionally, you can add the File Upload field when building a form from scratch. You can find this form field under the Fancy Fields section.
Creating Your File Upload Form
You’ll see early on that creating forms with the WPForms plugin is quite simple.
You can create your File Upload Form in any way that you want. For this instance, I will walk you through creating a File Upload Form that is for job applicants.
Step 1. Create A New Form
Click Add New and give your form a name. For this instance, we will name it “Job Application Form.”
You can either select to create your form using a Blank Form template or from the File Upload Form template that I had mentioned earlier.
The File Upload Form template has pre-loaded fields that relate to a typical Job Application form. The templates fields include:
- First and Last Name
- Phone
- File Upload
This is the most basic information you need from a job applicant. However, you can add or delete as many form fields as you want.
For the sake of showing you, we are going to add another File Upload field so the applicant can submit a cover letter.
You can do this by navigating to the fancy fields section and dragging the File Upload field into the form.
Step. 2 Customizing the File Upload Section
Like many other form fields, the File Upload field is customizable. Below are aspects of the form field that you can control:
- Label: You can control the label for the File Upload field. In this case, you want to label both fields “Resume” and “Cover Letter”
- Description: Descriptions give a brief explanation of what kind of file you are looking for from the user.
- Allowed Field Extensions: You can restrict the types of files that a user uploads. For a job application, you really should only accept PDFs or Word Docs.
- Max File Size: You can set the max size for the files your users upload. If you choose to leave this blank, WPForms defaults to a max size of 128MB.
- Required: You can choose whether or not to make the File Upload field a requirement.
- Style: You can switch between a Modern style and Classic style appearance for the File Upload Field.
Step 3. Embedding the Form
Once you have completed building your Job Application form, you need to add it somewhere on your website.
Typically, if you’re hiring, you will have a landing page specific for Job Opportunities. This is where you will add your new Job Application form.
Of course, you can add WPForms including File Upload forms anywhere on your website. This includes pages, blog posts, and even widgets.
Once you choose where you want to place the form, you can either add the WPForms widget manually or embed the form using the code generated within the dashboard.
Click “Update” and you will have successfully added your File Upload form to your page.
Viewing Form Submissions
Head back on over to WPForms located in the left sidebar within the WordPress Dashboard.
Select your File Upload form and click view Entries.
Here, you will see all your form submissions.
You can either right-click the file to download the file to your computer or click “View” to see the submission in your browser.
One last cool thing about WPForms is that you can use the Zapier addon to automatically save all files to either your Google Drive, Dropbox or other cloud services.
